HTC Touch HD

A 3.8" TFT-LCD touch-sensitive screen with a 480 x 800 WVGA native resolution is more than just a smartphone spec. It is a statement, and a bold one at that.

With this kind of real estate available to the Touch HD, HTC’s custom Windows Mobile GUI, TouchFLO 3D, finally has the necessary room to be fully enjoyed.  The bottom tab icons, your primary means of navigation, are large and finger-sized making it extremely simple to swipe from one pane to the next.

Like most Windows Mobile devices the Touch HD makes use of a non-capacitive touch display which makes it possible to use both a finger and a stylus to operate the device. This kind of resistive screen allows for great accuracy, but at the cost of being less easy to use than the iPhone’s capacitive touch display.

Our biggest complaint is that HTC’s custom GUI just doesn’t go deep enough; the incredibly frustrating and fiddly Windows Mobile 6.1 interface lurking just beyond the TouchFlo tab icons.

While the Touch HD utilizes the same chipset as the Touch Diamond and the same 288MB RAM as the Touch Pro it actually runs smother and faster than both. The device offers all the Windows Mobile functionality you need including Exchange email support, Microsoft Office documents editing and viewing, and Windows Mobile media player.

Applications that really benefit from the 3.8" display are the GPS functionality with Google Maps and the Opera Mobile Web browser. Opera Mobile 9.5 features tab functionality, something new to mobile browsing. The trouble with Opera is that it doesn’t support Flash, severely hindering its appeal.

Some of the Touch HD’s more impressive features include HSDPA, Wi-Fi, a 3.5 mm audio jack, a 5.0megapixel camera and motion sensor technology via its G-Sensor. Along with this you get all the standard bits such as Bluetooth, FM radio and a microSD expansion slot with an 8GB card in the packaging. In all we can confidently say that this is HTC’s best device yet, but Windows Mobile 7 can’t come soon enough.

Nokia leaks C2-06 Touch and Type accidentally, dual-SIM fans rejoice

The first dual-SIM member of the Nokia Touch and Type family has just made its unexpected public debut. The Nokia C2-06 (or C2-02 according to some sources) appeared on the Nokia Conversation blog, starring on an image dedicated to the IPv6 transition of the company's OVI browser.

As you can imagine, given the nature of the leak, there were no phone specifications mentioned, but this image is more than enough to confirm the existence of the handset.

Before this confirmation, there was always the chance that the leaked prototype we saw earlier was just a dead project that will never see the light of day. Well, it's not.

Now this "accidental" appearance of the unannounced C2-06 could be either a PR move by Nokia attempting to generate more interest to the Ovi browser article, or just an honest mistake, but whatever it is, we are sure the dual-SIM fans around the world will be glad it happened.

It was only recently, that we saw the first Dual SIM phones by Nokia, the Nokia X1-01 and C2-00, finally ship.

So how about an official announcement now so we know what exactly to be looking forward to?

Blackberry Touch Monaco/Monza Leaked

The phone in the picture above is the latest full touchscreen device from Blackberry that has just been leaked. It is known as the Touch Monaco/Monza.

The smartphone will be known by both names. The different names indicate the region and operator. It will be launched as the Monaco on the Verizon Wireless network in USA while the Monza is the global GSM version.

The phone does away with the SurePress technology featured in the Storm devices that wasn’t very user friendly. The device might not even belong to the Storm family of Blackberry phones.

The phone will run on Blackberry 6.1 OS and will need a Blackberry ID rather than a Blackberry PIN to login to the system. The advantage is that it makes backing up data and restoring it much easier.

The phone should be announced in a few months. Nothing more is known about the dewvice. We will keep you informed as new information appears.

Nokia X3 Touch and Type Review

Page 1 - Nokia X3 Touch and Type: Intro, Bundle Page 2 - Nokia X3 Touch and Type: Design and Build Page 3 - Nokia X3 Touch and Type: Display, Keypad, Software, Connectivity, Multimedia Page 4 - Nokia X3 Touch and Type: Battery Life and Verdict next

Nokia might be selling a lot of smartphones but their primary product continues to be the cheaper Series 40 phones. But despite that Nokia never thought of bringing S40 up to speed compared to its rivals. All that Nokia would do with every new update is give a small visual update that would make it visually similar to Nokia's S60 operating system, but nowhere close in terms of functionality.

Series 40 6th Edition is not far too different. What they have done is added a touchscreen layer on top, which makes it a bit more relevant in today's mobile world where not having a touchscreen seems like a serious flaw in the spec sheet. This does change a few things though and the resultant phone, the Nokia X3 Touch and Type or simply the X3-02 is unlike any S40 phone that came before. We decided to find out how much of a difference does having a touchscreen on an S40 phone make.
